Nail Treatment

Onychomycosis is a fungal infection of the finger or toe nails which is very hard to cure. These fungal infections usually cause staining, thickening and often softening of the nails. Curing nail fungus has its success rate at 60-80 percent and it is not assured that it will not happen again.

Nail fungus is a disease underneath the surface of the nail caused by fungi. When the tiny organisms take hold, the nail often becomes darker in color and foul smelling. Debris may collect beneath the nail plate, white marks regularly appear on the nail plate, and the infection is able of spreading to other toenails, the skin, or even the fingernails. If unnoticed, the infection can spread and possibly impair one's ability to work or even walk. This happens for the reason that the resulting thicker nails are tricky to trim and make walking painful when wearing shoes. Onychomycosis can also be accompanied by a secondary bacterial or yeast infection in or about the nail plate.

Nail fungus is hard to get rid of and needs treatment with proper medications, once it establishes in your nail bed. Unfortunately, in most cases, anti-fungal creams practical to the nail are useless because they do not penetrate the nail bed killing the fungus at its source. On the other hand, there are strong oral medications that must be taken for months in order to be effective. Be careful as most medications have side effects to other body organs like the liver or the skin, etc. Ask your physician to monitor side effects during treatment. This consists in periodic blood tests, regularly monthly. Any of the following symptoms suggests organ damage and be supposed to be reported immediately to your physician: nausea, unusual fatigue, severe loss of appetite, skin rashes, yellow eyes, dark urine, bleeding. Keep in mind that this list is far from being complete. If you are treating yourself for nail-fungal disease using oral medications, ask your physician for a total list.

Toe nail fungi don't just appear out of the blue. People who get contaminated catch their fungal infection from a source. This is somewhat different catching a cold or some other viral infection. Certain conditions must be in place for toe nail fungi to breed and contaminate you. Fungi generally live in warm, moist areas. This means that you will normally catch an infection in areas with water and a warm temperature like shower stalls and pool sides. You could on the other hand, also get infected if you borrow nail clippers and files used by a person who has a fungal infection. Toe nail fungi enter close to your toe nail.
